10 Basic Items for Every Man's Closet

I do believe there are about 10 basic things every guy should have in his closet, for the "just in case" moments. And I am not talking about just the jeans and t-shirt moments, although they are also a must. I am talking about the Grown Up moments: business, WEDDINGS, etc. etc.

    1. A Navy Suit: Solid or Pinstripe, two or three buttons, single breasted or double breasted. This is the perfect suit for practically all scenarios: business meetings, weddings, job interviews, social gatherings, funerals, the list goes on. This is the "look-at-me suit." The suit of confidence. "The correct suit."
    2. A Grey Solid Suit: Dark Charcoal to Pale Grey, two or three buttons, single breasted. This is the "serious-me" suit. The Power Suit. The "I mean business" suit—anyone seen Mad Men? To be worn in the more serious environments: board meetings, court rooms, etc. But there’s another side to the Grey Suit, too. You can also dress it down a little: pair with a turtle neck or colored shirt for social occasions from the infamous first date all the way to the meet-the-parents evening.
Note: If you are going to have two suits in your wardrobe then they should be well made. Custom is the way to go. This way you know they are going to fit you perfectly, you will look good, and they will be built to last. Hey, you have a choice: do you want to look good or not?
    3. The Classic Navy Blazer: A must for every closet. Typically worn in a more casual, less formal, social environment, but can also be worn for business depending on your company dress code. This you can dress up or down easily: with shirt and tie combo or with a polo, with khakis or jeans...the key here is versatility!
    4. A While Dress Shirt: 100% Cotton. This feels and looks better than synthetic, and it also breathes-- don’t want you getting all heated up, especially under the arms. You, of course, should have more than one in your closet…this is not an item to wear more than once. And keep in mind there are different variations of white colors from bright to creams so make a selection. Also, to avoid wrinkles suggest starch when having it dry cleaned.
    5. Khaki Trouser: Pleated or flat front depending on your body type. Cotton poplin or Wool gabardine. The khaki trouser is the perfect and most versatile All American garment, worn in many social or business environments. Own a pair of khakis and support your country!
    6. The Tie: You may think you already have this covered, seeing as how the tie never fails to be the safe gift that all we gentlemen receive - not necessarily to our liking, but a plethora of ties seem to sit in the wardrobe. This is not the tie I am referring to. I am talking about a Hand-made Silk Tie. Solid or conservative patterns. And of course, The Burgundy Tie is a must. It just seems to work with every outfit and adds just enough contrast. Don’t wait for this one to come as a gift. Buy yourself that perfect RED tie.
    7. The Perfect Polo: Solid colors or stripes. Select colors that you feel comfortable wearing and don't be afraid of Pink or Lemon. They wear well with your khaki, grey and navy trousers. The polo can be worn alone or under your navy blazer. Great for informal dinners or any casual settings.
    8. Brown Shoe: The one shoe that goes with everything dressy or casual is the Loafer. Invest in a good pair...they last.
    9. Brown Belt: With silver buckle. A brown belt goes with everything. But always remember the cardinal rule: brown shoe, brown belt - black shoe, black belt.
    10. The Top Coat: This is the investment. Cashmere or Wool and Cashmere blend. If you have only one coat, this should be it. You can walk into any environment feeling like a million bucks with the right top coat. The trench coat serves only one purpose (well only one real one): it keeps you dry—not warm. Invest in an umbrella to keep you dry. The Top Coat, Navy or Black, just does the job and does it well.
Of course, you do also need the perfect pair of Jeans in your closet. But these top 10 items are just the basic pieces needed to serve you well when ever those grown up moments arise because my number one rule for any man that I dress: Dress to Your Best.

If "The Top Coat" is the investment, then about how much should a good suit run money wise? Also, why is a black suit not one of the 10 Basic Item's for Every Man's Closet? I own a Navy Suit but I prefer by far my black suits!
